10.11.2026(주일) 마지막열매! (고전 9:25)
“우리는 얻는 것으로 생계를 유지하지만, 베푸는 것으로 삶을 만들어 간다”는 말이 있습니다. 말씀을 깨닫는 것이 하나님을 만나는 것이고, 말씀을 행하는 것이 하나님처럼 사는 것이며, 절제로 변화의 삶을 살게하는 것이 사람을 살리는 것입니다.
1. 자족하기를배웠기에산자다. “내가 궁핍하므로 말하는 것이 아니라 어떠한 형편에든지 내가 자족하기를 배웠노니 내가 비천에 처할 줄도 알고 풍부에 처할 줄도 알아 모든 일에 배부르며 배고픔과 풍부와 궁핍에도 일체의 비결을 배웠노라” (빌 4:11-12).
‘만족’은 한자로 ‘가득찰 만’(滿), ‘넉넉할 족’(足) 입니다. 마음에 모자람없이 충분하고 넉넉하여 흡족한 상태를 뜻합니다. 불행하게도 이 세상에서는 진정한 만족이 안됩니다. 솔로몬에게 여자가 천명이나 있었으나 만족하지 못했습니다. 그는 전도서에서 “모든 것이 헛되다”고 말합니다.
눈은 보는 것만으로 만족이 없고 귀는 듣는 것만으로 채워지지 않기 때문입니다. “만물의 피곤함을 사람이 말로 다 할 수 없나니 눈은 보아도 족함이 없고 귀는 들어도 차지 아니하는도다” (전 1:8). 2. 만족은절제를통해서만완성된다. 왜 만족하는 데에 절제가 필연적일까요?
절제하면서 어떻게 만족할 수 있나요? 절제가 없는 만족은 일시적인 쾌락에 불과하며 끝없는 갈증을 유발하기 때문입니다. 우리는 한가지에 만족하지 못하고 하나 더, 한번 더 하게 됩니다. “하나님이 사람을 정직하게 지으셨으나 사람은 많은 꾀를 낸 것이니라” (전 7:29).
(1) “지나침은모자람과같다” 과한 운동이 건강을 해칠 수 있는 것처럼 아무리 좋은 것이라도 지나치면 문제가 됩니다. 절제는 스스로 선을 긋고 멈출 줄 아는 지혜입니다! 광야의 삶은 하나님이 멈추라 하실 때 멈추고, 나아가라 하실 때 나아가는 것이었습니다. 절제는 때를 아는 지혜입니다.
(2) 절제하는지혜로이기는자가되는것이다. 자신의 행동을 절제하는 것이 자기 절제의 습관으로 이어집니다. “이기기를 다투는 자마다 모든 일에 절제하나니 저희는 썩을 면류관을 얻고자 하되 우리는 썩지 아니할 것을 얻고자 하노라” (고전 9:25).
자기 절제는 행동뿐 아니라 그 행동을 이끄는 생각에서 시작됩니다. 참된 지혜는 감정과 행동을 절제하는 것입니다. 순간의 감정에 휘둘리게 되면 인간관계가 무너지게 됩니다. 자신의 감정을 절제해야 합니다. 극단적인 말 대신 지혜로운 말을 선택하는 것이 참된 자기 절제입니다.
화가 날 때도 자신을 다스리고 올바른 말을 선택하는 것이 하나님의 자녀다운 모습입니다. 음식의 절제는 아무 것이나 먹고 싶은대로 먹지 않고 자신을 다스리는 것입니다. 또한 정신의 절제는 어떤 정신으로 하느냐, 사느냐 하는 훈련입니다. 이처럼 자기 절제는 삶의 모든 영역에 적용됩니다.
무슨 말을 할지, 무엇을 행동할지 분별해야 합니다. 참된 만족은 자기 절제를 통해 다듬어질 때 이루어집니다. (3) 지극히작은것으로만족한다. 지극히 작은 것에서 사랑의 위대함을 깨닫습니다. 절제할 수 있는 능력을 가져야 작은 것에도 감동을 받을 수 있습니다. 만족은 작은 데서 옵니다.
하나님의 나라는 크고 화려한 것 보다 작고 보잘 것 없어 보이는 것을 통해 역사합니다. 엘리야가 낙심하여 삶의 목적과 의지가 흔들릴 때 하나님은 강한 바람이나 지진, 불 가운데 계시지 않고 그 후에 들려온 ‘세미한’ 소리 곧 지극히 작고 조용한 음성 가운데 나타나셨습니다 (왕상 19:11-12).
3. 이기는자의마지막열매가절제다. “오직 성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제니” (갈 5:22-23). 성령의 열매 9가지가 있습니다. 절제 앞에 있는 8가지 열매가 “사랑, 희락, 화평, 오래 참음, 자비, 양선, 충성, 온유” 입니다.
성령의 열매는 ‘사랑’으로 시작해서 ‘절제’로 끝납니다. 모든 것이 좋은 열매지만 마지막 ‘절제의 열매’가 없다면 ‘구속의 빛’을 내지 못합니다. 땅엣 것을 절제하지 못하는 내가 땅의 사람에게 본이 되며, 열방을 살린다는 것은 억지입니다. 그래서 성령의 마지막 열매가 자기 절제입니다.
(1) 절제의방법은말씀과기도다. 하나님의 말씀과 기도를 통해 거룩해집니다 (딤전 4:5). 거룩한 삶을 위해 성경이 주시는 답은 절제입니다. 하나님의 사랑을 통해 이를 알 수 있습니다. 하나님께서는 우리를 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨고 그를 믿는 자마다 영생을 얻게 하셨습니다 (요 3:16).
고린도전서 13:4에서는 사랑을 “오래 참고 온유하며 시기하지 아니하며 자랑하지 아니하며 교만하지 아니하는 것”이라고 말씀합니다. 여기에 절제라는 단어는 없지만 오래 참는 것이 절제의 연습이지요. 그래서 사랑이절제이며오래참음이절제의훈련인것입니다.
그래서 성령의 열매가 사랑으로 시작합니다 (갈 5:22). 오래 참는 것은 가정을 건강하게 세우는 사랑의 힘입니다. 하나님이 주신 믿음으로 마음을 다스릴 때 맺는 삶의 열매가 ‘절제’입니다. 절제를 통해 이겨내야 할 것을 이기고 말씀과 기도로 하나님과 동행하면 진정한 거룩함에 이릅니다.
(2) 절제해야옛날을기억한다. “옛날을 기억하라 역대의 연대를 생각하라 네 아비에게 물으라 그가 네게 설명할 것이요 네 어른들에게 물으라 그들이 네게 이르리로다” (신 32:7). 하나님께서는 옛날을 기억하라고 하십니다. 탕자가 아버지의 집을 떠나 모든 재산을 탕진했습니다 (눅 15장).
그러나 그는 결정적인 순간에 아버지의 집을 기억했고 아버지께 돌아왔습니다. 하나님의 신령한 언약은 우리가 어디에서 왔고 어디로 가는지를 기억하게 하십니다! 자기를 비운 후에야 자기가 어디에 있어야 할지를 무엇을 해야 할지를 깨달았던 것입니다.
사랑하는 여러분, 절제는 축복이자 동시에 도전입니다. 그 분의 뜻을 이루기 위하여 내가 나를 이기는 능력과 지혜가 절제인 것입니다. 절제를 행함으로 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고, 우리에게 맡기신 하나님의 섭리를 이루는 자가 되시길 바랍니다!
10.04.2026(Sunday) Labor in the Lord Endures Forever! (1 Co 15:58)
There was a child born in England, and though he was frail, he later entered the ministry. He was not satisfied with the quality of the hymns of those days, which were stiffly translated verses from Psalms recited aloud, and he thought they failed to convey the hope and joy of Jesus Christ.
Someone challenged him to write better hymns, so he adapted the content of Psalms into gospel-centered, lively lyrics, so that anyone could easily sing them. He was Isaac Watts, who wrote the famous hymn ‘Joy to the World,’ and because he revolutionized the way the church sang hymns, he became known as the ‘Father of English Hymnody.’
The Bible says this: “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” What reward did God give to a minister like this, who dedicated his entire life – body and soul – to the ministry of praising God?
1. The Most Great God. In Hebrew, the three words for the word ‘great’ are (1) gadol, (2) rabab, and(3) raba. They all mean “great,” but ‘rahab’ and ‘raba’ are not used for God because they refer to being great, many, or abundant in number or quantity.
Our Lord is a ‘great’ (gadol) God. “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure” (Ps 147:5). How is He a great Lord? He is a Lord that is more powerful and holy than we could ever imagine, and is more glorified than what we can believe.
(1) That ‘unfathomable’ God is our Father! “Great (gadol) is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness (gadol) no one can fathom” (Ps 145:3). God reveals to us, through the work of redemption, His unfathomable greatness.
(2) That ‘great’ God is among us! “You shall not be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God” (Dt 7:21). (3) That very great God is Abraham’s reward! “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great” (Ge 15:1).
2. The Very Great Reward Our good God rewards those who believe. The one who believes in the Word is blessed along with Abraham. “So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith” (Gal 3:9). God said to Abram that He is his “very great (gadol) reward.”
In the same way, God is the ‘very great reward’ to the believer. In the bible, there is the ‘reward of inheritance’ and ‘reward of recompense.’ Both rewards are received by God’s grace but the reasons for receiving the rewards differ. (1) Reward of inheritance “Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Col 3:24).
The reward of inheritance is not received through my own ability or merit, but it is a gift of grace given upon me by virtue of my status as an heir, a child of God. (2) Reward of recompense “He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor” (1 Co 3:8). This reward is given as recompense given for working for the Lord ‘according to one’s work.’
It is a reward based on our devotion, sacrifice, and love. He is a God who remembers our words and actions for His glory and rewards accordingly. “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done” (Rev 22:12).
(3) The difference between the reward of inheritance and the reward of recompense. The reward of inheritance focuses on ‘who I am.’ It is a reward received because one is a child of God. The reward of recompense focuses on ‘what I have done.’ It is a reward received for faithfulness and deeds performed for God. There is a difference between receiving salvation and how you live as a child of God.
3. 144,000 Who Follow the Lamb. (1) The ‘overcomers’ receive the reward of inheritance and reward of recompense. In the last days, the 144,000 are ones who receive these two rewards, or a ‘double portion’ of reward. This is because the 144,000, those called and chosen at the decisive moment, are faithful to the Lamb until the very end (Rev 14:1-5).
Beloved brothers and sisters, the Lamb is the Almighty God, the Lord of lords and King of kings. “They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful” (Rev 17:14).
These very people are us. Believe that we are the 144,000. We, who have been called and chosen, overcome together as a community of faith. We receive the reward of inheritance as a ‘child’ believing in God, whereas we receive the reward of recompense for our ‘deeds’ of faith.
(2) Labor in the Lord endures forever! All of the service, dedication, and effort we have given and continue to give for the Lord does not go away in vain. When ‘Isaac Watts’ was worn out in body and mind, ‘Thomas Abney,’ who was the mayor of London, invited him to his house and urged him to “rest for just one week.”
However, what was meant to be just a one-week visit turned into a bond that kept Watts in that home for the rest of his life. For 36 years he continued his ministry and writing in that mansion, and he went on to compose over 600 songs. For this man who had no one that cared for him, those 36 years were the care the Lord provided through the mayor of London!
We also have times when we feel disheartened or want to give up amid life’s dramas, but God, who knows us through and through, sends a helping hand and cares for us. Therefore do not forget that even the smallest effort we make now has eternal value.
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Co 15:58).
