5.24.2026(주일) 나를 귀하게 여기신다! (시 116:15)
1. 성도는 끝까지 믿음을 지킨다! 누군가가 “그림의 떡은 떡이 아니요, 붙지 않은 불은 불이 아니며, 간절하지 않는 기도는 기도가 아니다”라고 했습니다. 그렇습니다. 믿음, 소망, 사랑은 환난 가운데서도 실질적이고 만질 수 있을 정도로 확실해야 합니다.
믿음의 대상이 누구인지가 분명하지 않으면 복음을 증거할 수 없기 때문입니다. 성도는 환난에서도 타협하지 않는 신앙고백으로 순교하는 것입니다! 죽음 앞에서도 자신의 믿음을 굽히지 않은 세 사람에 대한 예화를 나누겠습니다.
(1) 이것으로 부족하다면 피로써 증명하겠다! 스코틀랜드 종교개혁자 존 낙스는 믿음으로 쓴 책 때문에 체포되었습니다. “너의 생각과 믿음을 철회하겠느냐”는 협박에 그는 “나는 마음으로 믿었고, 입으로 말했고 손으로 썼다. 이것으로 부족하다면 피로써 증명하겠다”라고 대답했습니다.
(2) 차라리 죽음으로 그리스도를 증거하겠다! 로마 귀족 세실리아에게는 부귀영화가 약속되어 있었으나 그녀는 예수 그리스도를 알고 난 후 신전제사를 거부하여, 신성모독죄로 배교를 강요당했습니다. 그러나 “차라리 죽음으로 그리스도를 증거하겠다”며 그녀는 순교의 길을 택했습니다.
참수형을 당해 목이 반쯤 베인 상태로 3일간 고통을 겪다 죽었는데 유언대로 그녀의 집은 교회로 개조되었습니다. (3) 결단코 그리스도만은 포기할 수 없다! “하늘이 진주고 땅이 금덩어리여도 가족을 위해 포기하겠다”라며 가족을 사랑한 겔린드 물러라는 네덜란드인이 있었습니다.
그는 믿음을 버리고 성경 읽기를 포기하지 않으면 화형을 당한다는 경고를 받았으나 결코 예수 그리스도만은 포기할 수 없다는 말을 남기고 순교했습니다. 환난과 박해의 시대에 우리의 믿음이 어떤 힘과 능력을 낼 수 있나요? 현재 구속사역도 우리의 목숨을 걸 정도의 가치가 있지 않습니까?
2. 하나님은 성도의 죽는 것을 귀중히 보신다! 하나님은 예수믿는 믿음을 포기하지 않고 죽음을 택한 그들의 믿음, 소망, 사랑의 희생을 잊지 않으셨습니다. “성도의 죽는 것을 여호와께서 귀중히 보시는도다” 왜 하나님은 성도의 죽음을 귀하게 여기시느냐? (시 116:15).
(1) 하나님은 성도를 ‘자신처럼’ 사랑하신다. 기쁨은 복입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 기쁨의 복으로 가득차 있습니다. “내가 기쁨으로 그들에게 복을 주되 정녕히 나의 마음과 정신을 다하여 그들을이 땅에 심으리라” (렘 32:41). 말씀을 믿는 자를 사랑하시되 기쁨과 평강으로 채워주십니다.
성도는 하나님의 보시기에 보배롭고 존귀한 자입니다. “너를 보배롭고 존귀하게 여기고 너를 사랑하였은즉 내가 사람들을 주어 너를 바꾸며 백성들로 네 생명을 대신하리니” (사 43:4). 우리는 하나님의 약속인 영생을 믿고 소망하기에 환난가운데서도 하나님의 기쁨을 택한 것입니다.
(2) 그러므로 “너는 내 것이라” 하신다. “야곱아 너를 창조하신 여호와께서 이제 말씀하시느니라 이스라엘아 너를 조성하신 자가 이제 말씀하시느니라 너는 두려워 말라 내가 너를 구속하였고 내가 너를 지명하여 불렀나니 너는 내 것이라” (사 43:1).
예수를 보내사 십자가에 희생하시면서까지 우리를 이처럼 사랑하셨고 보배로운 피로 우리의 모든 죄를 사하시고 의롭다고 칭하시고 구속하셨습니다. 그러므로 “너는 내 것이라” 하십니다. (3) 회개하는 자마다 하나님의 것이다. 죄가 없어지는 방법은 회개 밖에 없습니다. 회개하면 됩니다.
복음은 회개를 요구합니다. 그래야 복음이 들리고, 복음이 믿어지고, 복음대로 됩니다! 하나님을 향한 믿음을 지킨 거지 나사로는 ‘심령이 가난한 자’였습니다! 중심을 보시는 하나님은 그의 믿음을 보시고 그의 믿은대로 해주셨습니다. 하나님은 그의 죽음을 소중히 여기셨습니다.
마침내 천사들을 보내사 아브라함의 품으로 인도하신 것입니다. “그 거지가 죽어 천사들에게 받들려 아브라함의 품에 들어가고 부자도 죽어 장사되매“ (눅 16:22). 아브라함의 품은 하나님의 나라 곧 영생의 상징입니다!
3. 나를 귀하게 여기신다! 아버지는 그리스도를 섬기는 자를 귀하게 여기신다! “사람이 나를 섬기려면 나를 따르라 나 있는 곳에 나를 섬기는 자도 거기 있으리니 사람이 나를 섬기면 내 아버지께서 저를 귀히 여기시리라” (요 12:26). 우리는 그리스도를 섬기기에 부족한 사람들이잖아요.
매사에 모자르고 부족한 자녀이고 부모이며 친구이며 동역자입니다. 우리의 자녀를 하나님의 자녀로 양육하는 방법도, 부모를 공경하는 법도 제대로 모를 때가 많습니다. 하지만 아버지는 이런 우리의 부족한 것을 채워주십니다! 그래서 날마다 하나님의 은혜를 기다려야 되는 것입니다.
아브라함, 이삭, 야곱, 요셉, 노아, 에녹 하나님과 동행하는 사람마다 모두 기다림의 사람들입니다. 기다림은 시간이 아니라 때를 의미합니다. 시간이 간다고 해서 때가 되는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님은 때가 아직 이르지 않았다고 하셨습니다. 그러나 하나님의 일을 하시는 시간이 바로 때입니다.
“포도주가 모자란지라 예수의 어머니가 예수에게 이르되 저희에게 포도주가 없다 하니 예수께서 가라사대 여자여 나와 무슨 상관이 있나이까 내 때가 아직 이르지 못하였나이다” (요 2:3-4). 예수님은 창조주로서 하나님의 일을 하시면서 어머니를 하나님의 백성으로 대한 것입니다.
시간의 흐름과 하나님의 시간은 다릅니다. 준비가 되면 때는 오게 되어 있습니다. 준비가 되면곧 때입니다! 말씀에 순종하는 사람이 있으면 때입니다. 아버지의 역사를 일으키는 때가 된 것입니다. 오늘, 우리가 때입니다! ‘열방을 살리는’ 영의 역사를 일으키는 때가 우리입니다!
“그 어머니가 하인들에게 이르되 너희에게 무슨 말씀을 하시든지 그대로 하라 하니라 예수께서 저희에게 이르시되 항아리에 물을 채우라 하신즉 아구까지 채우니 이제는 떠서 연회장에게 갖다 주라 하시매 갖다 주었더니” (요 2:5,7-8).
5.17.2026(Sunday) Give Thanks to the LORD! (1 Ch 16:34)
1. Give Thanks in All Circumstances! The Bible tells us to give thanks in all circumstances. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1Th 5:18). Because God’s love is faithful and steadfast!
“Circumstances” is a compound word derived from the Latin circum (around) and stare (to stand), originating from the meaning “being surrounded.” Therefore, “Give thanks in all circumstances” meaning whether the environment surrounding you is good or bad regardless of the situation, give thanks.
Here is a true story. The elevator shook to a halt, and the six people inside joined forces to pry open the doors, only to find a wall. One of the people among them was a window washer using the handle of his squeegee, he smashed through the wall, only to find himself on the 50th floor.
It took all 6 of them 45 minutes to descend the stairs and they all made it safely outside five minutes later, the building collapsed. It was September 11, 2001. Jan Demczur, an immigrant from Poland, had worked for 10 years as a window washer at the 110-story World Trade Center North Tower.
The squeegee he used every day was merely an ordinary tool, but it became a reason for gratitude as it saved six lives. Recognized for its historical significance, that squeegee handle is now housed in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Beloved brothers and sisters, have a thankful heart. No matter the circumstances, when you give thanks, you will find reasons to be thankful.
2. Give Thanks to the LORD! “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34 reveals to whom our gratitude is due and why we should give thanks. The reason the LORD is the object of our thanksgiving lies in His attributes.
(1) Because He is good, and His mercy endures forever! He is the God who does not break a bruised reed nor quench a smoldering wick, but administers justice in truth (Is 42:3). “He will not break a bruised reed nor quench a smoldering wick until He brings justice to victory!” (Mt 12:20).
(2) Because the Lord’s faithfulness and justice go hand in hand! The Lord’s goodness and mercy will never depart from us—not until we have prevailed through His faithfulness and justice. Until we prevail—until everything unfolds according to His divine providence! As long as the “first heaven and the first earth” endure, the reality of thorns and thistles remains a part of everyone’s life.
It is a thorn of pain, sickness, and tribulation. Therefore, amidst life’s difficulties and trials, it is not easy to give thanks in all circumstances and to give thanks to the Lord. There are sorrows and pains in our lives that are difficult to overcome. Apostle Paul prayed for his suffering and thorn to be taken away, but God answered him like this.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Co 12:9). That is right. When I am weak, that is precisely when I become strong (2 Co 2:10)!
3. A Grateful Person Looks to the Lord. “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame” (Ps 34:5). To look up means to gaze upward in reverence. To look to the Lord signifies the act of earnestly fixing one’s gaze upon God alone and placing one’s complete reliance on Him. It means that those who look to the Lord in hope will be clothed with His radiance!
This is a poetic expression of the truth that those who earnestly seek God amidst difficulties find joy and assurance. To those who lift their eyes to behold the Lord, He bestows His divine radiance and grants a life free from shame. If you practice gratitude, you will never lose your joy. Do you know the difference between happiness and joy? Is it the same feeling?
Happiness is an ‘emotion’, but joy is an ‘attitude.’ Can you give thanks even in the circumstances and situations that make you feel discouraged? That is why it is essential to understand the distinction between happiness and joy. 400 years ago, during Europe’s 30 Years’ War (1618–1648), there was a pastor named Rinkart in the German city of Eilenburg.
It is said that, due to war, disease, and famine, he conducted 50 funerals every day and ultimately buried 8,000 people. In his circumstances, there were no outward conditions that seemed to warrant gratitude. However, it is said that he composed Hymn 20, “Now Thank We All Our God.”
“Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices; who wondrous things hath done, in whom His world rejoices. The blessings He has given from ages past—His boundless love—He bestows upon us as a gift, now and forever!” How could he give thanks and praise while people were dying from war, disease, and hunger all around them? It was because he kept a thankful heart. By faith!
Because the posture of his heart toward God remained unshaken, he was able to give thanks without ever losing his joy. Joy differs from happiness, for it is a gift that God bestows upon our hearts through the Holy Spirit. While happiness depends on external circumstances, joy being a grace granted by God never departs from the very core of our being.
People can experience happiness when they escape the difficulties they face and their circumstances change. However joy is, in essence, a posture of the heart grounded in faith. Even if my physical problems are not resolved and I remain in illness, pain, or difficult circumstances, I can still rejoice because of God.
Because we do it with faith, hope, and love! So the grateful person looks to the Lord. Indeed the life of one who looks to the Lord is never put to shame! “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame” (Ps 34:5)!
