9.06.2026(주일) 바산의 소들과 개들! (시 22:12-13,16)
1. 바산의 황소들 ‘바산’은 ‘기름진, 비옥한’이란 뜻입니다. 바산은 갈릴리 바다 동북쪽에 위치한 고원이며 오늘날의 ‘골란고원’을 말합니다. 이곳은 영양가 높은 풀이 많이 자라는 비옥한 땅으로 목축업과 농업으로 명성이 높았습니다.
(1) 소중의 소 기름진 땅에서 풍부하게 먹고 자란 덕분에 소들은 덩치가 압도적으로 컸을 뿐만 아니라 힘이 매우 세고 성질이 사나우며 난폭했습니다. (2) 하나님을 떠난 힘센 자 바산의 소는 실제 소를 뜻하는 것이 아니라 하나님을 떠난 힘센 자, 악인을 상징합니다.
“많은 황소들이 나를 에워싸며 바산의 힘센 소들이 나를 둘렀으며 내게 그 입을 벌림이 찢고 부르짖는 사자 같으니이다” (시 22:12-13). 다윗 때에 바산의 힘센 소들이 에워쌌는데 이는 다윗을 없애려는 사울처럼 난폭하고 강력한 대적을 비롯한 죄악의 거인들을 뜻하는 비유적 표현입니다.
시편 22편은 궁극적으로 십자가에서 고난받으신 주님을 예언하는 시로서, 바산의 소는 예수를 못 박으라는 종교인, 권력자, 완악한 군중들을 상징합니다. 2. 바산의 암소들 다윗으로부터 250년 후 아모스 때에는 바산의 암소들 곧 북이스라엘 수도 사마리아의 귀부인들이 날뛰었습니다.
남편의 권력과 부를 믿고 사치와 향락의 극치를 달리는 악한 자들인데 가난한 자를 학대하고 궁핍한 자를 압제하였습니다. 이를 바산의 소로 표현했는데 이들은 더 많은 부를 축적하기 위해 가난한 자들을 억압, 착취했으며 그 결과 가난한 자들은 더욱 가난하고 어려워질 수 밖에 없었습니다.
그들은 취하고 싶어서 남편에게 술을 더 요구하며 최고의 향락과 쾌락을 원했던 것입니다. “사마리아 산에 거하는 바산 암소들아 이 말을 들으라 너희는 가난한 자를 학대하며 궁핍한 자를 압제하며 가장에게 이르기를 술을 가져다가 우리로 마시게 하라 하는도다” (암 4:1).
3. 바산의 산들 바산의 모든 것은 다 크고 높고 웅장했는데 레바논의 백향목이 세계적이었다면 바산의 상수리나무가 그랬습니다. 바산의 상수리나무는 세계적으로 유명했습니다. “또 레바논의 높고높은 모든 백향목과 바산의 모든 상수리나무와”(사 2:13). 과연 바산의 산도 교만했습니다.
“바산의 산은 하나님의 산임이여 높은 산이로다 너희 높은 산들아 어찌하여 하나님이 거하시려 하는 산을 시기하여 보느뇨 진실로 여호와께서 이 산에 영영히 거하시리로다” (시 68:15,16). 크고 높은 바산의 산은 헤롯이 예수님을 시기한 것처럼 하나님이 거하시려는 시온산을 시기했습니다.
4. 바산의 개들 “개들이 나를 에워쌌으며 악한 무리가 나를 둘러 내 수족을 찔렀나이다” (시 22:16). 탐욕스러운 개들이 다윗의 손과 발을 찔렀습니다. 2천년 전 예수님 때에 바산의 황소들과 개들은 종교지도자들이었습니다. 하나님을 모르는 탐욕스런 삯꾼 목자들이었습니다.
“이 개들은 탐욕이 심하여 족한줄을 알지 못하는 자요 몰각한 목자들이라 다 자기 길로 돌이키며 어디 있는 자이든지 자기 이만 도모하며” (사 56:11). 다윗의 예언대로 예수님은 십자가에서 죽으셨습니다. 율법을 안다고 하는 바리새인, 사두개인, 제사장, 서기관들은 정작 예수를 몰랐습니다.
불행하게도 하나님을 알지 못하는데도 ‘목자’의 행세를 하는 것입니다. 지금의 때도 마찬가지입니다. 그래서 이들은 벙어리 개, 짖을 줄 모르는 무지한 개입니다. 사랑하는 여러분, 우리는 말씀을 통해 다시 오시는 주님을 알아보는 영적인 눈이 필요합니다.
“그 파숫군들은 소경이요 다 무지하여 벙어리개라 능히 짖지 못하는 다 꿈꾸는 자요 누운 자요” (사 56:10). “개들과 술객들과 행음자들과 살인자들과 우상 숭배자들과 및 거짓말을 좋아하며 지어내는 자마다 성 밖에 있으리라” (계 22:15). 이런 개들은 천국 밖에 있게 됩니다.
5. 온갖 짐승이 두른다해도! 지금 우리는 7년 대환난 중에서 전 3년 반이 끝나가는 시점인 한 때, 두 때를 지나고 반 때에 와 있습니다. 집을 지키는 개가 큰 소리로 짖어 위험을 알리듯, 하나님의 집을 지키는 목자는 때에 맞는 말씀과 훈계로 하나님의 백성을 영적으로 무장시켜야 합니다.
성경대로 가르치지 못하는 목자는 위험을 알리지 못하며 성도들을 준비시키지 못하기 때문에 최악입니다. 그러나 마지막 아담은 살려주는 영이 되어 변화의 실체를 보여주는 구속 경륜을 이루십니다. 사랑하는 여러분, 소망하지 못하는 자에게 마귀가 사자처럼 나타난다는 것을 기억하세요.
“근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니” (벧전 5:8). 왜 하루하루를 귀하게 살아야 합니다? 하나님을 기다리는 자에게는 천사가 둘러 진을 치고 보호하십니다. “여호와의 사자가 주를 경외하는 자를 둘러 진 치고 저희를 건지시는도다” (시 34:7).
우리가 하나님을 바라보며 그 분만을 경외한다면 어떤 일이 닥쳐도 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 죄인들의 형통을 부러워할 이유도 없습니다. 예수 안에서 하나님이 거듭나게 하신 나를 지키면 됩니다. 예배가 전부입니다! 세상 속에서 나와 가정과 이웃을 주 안에서 지키며 살아가면 됩니다.
우리를 여러 모양의 짐승들이 에워싸지만, 마지막 때인 1335일까지 기다리면 새 하늘과 새 땅이 도래합니다. “기다려서 일천 삼백 삼십 오일까지 이르는 그 사람은 복이 있으리라 너는 가서 마지막을 기다리라 이는 네가 평안히 쉬다가 끝날에는 네 업을 누릴 것임이니라” (단 12:12-13).
바산의 소든 개든 무엇이 우리를 두른다해도 하나님은 하늘에서 불을 보내어 저들을 소멸하시고 우리를 미혹하고 못살게 하는 자들은 불못에 던지움을 받게 됩니다. “미혹하는 마귀가 불과 유황 못에 던지우니 짐승과 거짓 선지자도 있어 세세토록 밤낮 괴로움을 받으리라” (계 20:10).
사랑하는 여러분, 하나님은 자기를 진실하게 찾는 자를 가까이 하시고 사랑하시며 모든 환난에서 구원하십니다! “여호와께서는 자기에게 간구하는 모든 자 곧 진실하게 간구하는 모든 자에게 가까이 하시는도다” (시 145:18)!
9.06.2026(Sunday) The Bulls and Dogs of Bashan! (Ps 22:12-13,16)
1. The Bulls of Bashan. “Bashan” means “fruitful, fertile.” Bashan was a highland region located northeast of the Sea of Galilee and the area is known today as the “Golan Heights.” Known to have highly fertile soil, as well as abundant and nutritious pasture, this region was famous for both livestock farming and agriculture.
(1) The bull of bulls. Due to the rich grazing found in the fertile land, the bulls not only grew to an immense size but were also incredibly strong, possessing a fierce and violent temperament. (2) The mighty who have turned away from God. The bulls of Bashan do not literally refer to bulls; rather, they symbolize the one who has turned away from God, the wicked.
“Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me” (Ps 22:12-13). In the time of David, the strong bulls of Bashan surrounded David and this is a metaphor for the giants of sin, who are violent and powerful adversaries like Saul, who sought to destroy David.
Ultimately, Psalm 22 is a poem that prophesies the Lord who suffered on the cross, and the bulls of Bashan symbolize the religious figures, people in power, and stubborn crowds, who demanded that Jesus be crucified. 2. The Cows of Bashan. 250 years after David, in the time of Amos, the cows of Bashan, that is, the noblewomen living in Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, have gone wild.
They were wicked women who relied on their husbands’ power and wealth, and lived lives of extreme luxury and self-indulgence. They abused the poor and oppressed the needy. Such people are described as the cows of Bashan, who oppressed and exploited the poor to amass greater wealth, inevitably leaving the poor even poorer and in greater hardship.
They craved further intoxication, so they demanded more alcohol from their husbands and desired for extreme indulgence and pleasure. “Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy and say to your husbands, ‘Bring us some drinks’” (Am 4:1)!
3. The Mountains of Bashan. Everything in Bashan was large, tall, and magnificent; if the cedars of Lebanon were world-renowned, so were the oaks of Bashan. The oaks of Bashan were world-renowned. “For all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty, and all the oaks of Bashan” (Is 2:13). Indeed, the mountain of Bashan was also lifted up in pride.
“Mount Bashan, majestic mountain, Mount Bashan, rugged mountain, why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the Lord himself will dwell forever?” (Ps 68:15,16). The large and lofty mountain of Bashan envied Mount Zion, where God desired to dwell, just as Herod envied Jesus.
4. The Dogs of Bashan. “Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet.” (Ps 22:16). Greedy dogs pierced David’s hands and feet. 2000 years ago, in the time of Jesus, the bulls of Bashan and dogs were the religious leaders. They were greedy, hired shepherds who did not know God.
“They are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way, they seek their own gain” (Is 56:11). Just like David’s prophecy, Jesus died on the cross. The Pharisees, Sadducees, priests, and scribes, who claimed to know the law, did not truly know Jesus.
Unfortunately, they acted as “shepherds” even though they did not know God. It is the same in our time. Thus, they are mute dogs, ignorant dogs who are unable to bark. Beloved brothers and sisters, we need spiritual eyes to recognize the Lord who is coming again through the Word.
“Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream” (Is 56:10). “Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood” (Rev 22:15). Those kinds of dogs will remain outside of heaven.
5. Even If Surrounded By All Manner of Beasts! We are currently at the point where the first 3 and a half years of the 7 year Great Tribulation are drawing to a close, meaning “half a time” after passing “a time” and “times.” Just as a watchdog ought to bark loudly to sound a warning, a shepherd who guards the house of God must spiritually equip God’s people with the Word and discipline.
A shepherd who fails to teach according to the Bible is the worst because they are unable to warn of the danger nor prepare the saints. However, the Last Adam becomes a life-giving spirit and fulfills the redemptive plan that reveals the reality of transformation. Beloved brothers and sisters, remember that the devil appears like a lion to those who are unable to hope.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Pe 5:8). Why should we treasure each and every day? To those who wait upon God, His angels encamp around and protect them. “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them” (Ps 34:7)
If we look to God and fear Him alone, we do not need to worry, no matter what may come our way. We also do not need to envy the prosperity of sinners. We just need to guard ourselves, whom God has allowed to be born again in Jesus. Worship is everything! While living in this world, we simply need to guard ourselves, our family, and our neighbors.
Although various forms of beasts surround us, if we wait until 1335 days, the time of the end, the new heaven and new earth will arrive. “Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days. As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance” (Da 12:12-13).
Whatever may surround us, whether the bulls or dogs of Bashan, God will send the fire from heaven to consume them, and those who deceive and oppress us will be cast into the lake of fire. “The devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Rev 20:10).
Beloved brothers and sisters, to those who sincerely seek Him, God comes near to them, loves them, and delivers them from all kinds of tribulation! “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth” (Ps 145:18)!
